Please join us next week at Bertha House for a free screening of Brooklyn Inshallah, with Gazan filmmaker Ahmed Mansour in attendance!

Brooklyn Inshallah tells the story of Father Khader El-Yateem, a Palestinian American Pastor as he runs for city council in Brooklyn. The film highlights anti-Palestinian racism in the United States, and gives insight into one of the many political fights that the Palestinian diaspora community has taken to uphold its dignity. This is also a story of hope, as expressed by the powerful surge of support the campaign experienced, not least as a result of a group of young interfaith organisers.

Mansour will briefly introduce and contextualise the film, followed by the 52 minute screening, which will culminate in an open discussion.

We so appreciated the feeling of camaraderie this offered us — allowing us be intentional in our joy and commitment to justice, as well as to establish a future beyond zionism; one that is rooted in equality and dignity for all.

SAJFP stands in solidarity with our comrades on campuses in North America and Europe who are protesting for Palestine, even in the face of violent suppression from police, politicians, and university administrators.

Student protest movements in the United States and elsewhere were instrumental in helping to bring down apartheid in our country. As then, now too, divestment from the brutal settler colonial regime is crucial. We therefore join the protesters in demanding that universities in South Africa and around the world cut ties with genocidal Israel.

As we reflect on the oppression of our ancestors in Mitzrayim and their struggle for freedom, we must not forget that our freedom is meaningless without the freedom of everyone.

As we sit around the Pesach table, a space which has a long history of being the site of revolutionary organising, we must not look away from the ongoing and escalating state-sanctioned violence in the West Bank, while the genocide continues in Gaza.

The Pesach seder forces us to remember the bitterness of oppression, requiring us to oppose systems of oppression wherever we encounter them.

@sajewsforfreepalestine in Cape Town invites you to our Solidarity Seder and Fundraiser. On Pesach (Passover), the Seder involves the ritual of retelling the story of Exodus, a story etched into Jewish culture, history and spirituality as one from oppression to liberation. As we retell the Exodus story, we tell it alongside the stories of other oppressed people, as we fulfil the mitzvah of maggid (telling the story). This year, rather than celebrate a particular liberation, our Seder aims to create a space to reflect, discuss and deepen our solidarity with struggles for liberation everywhere – especially in Palestine and at home. Our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of everyone.

Tickets:
The Seder is a fundraiser, with all ticket proceeds going to two food aid programmes – @gift.of.the.givers (Gaza) and @obspastakitchen (Cape Town). The basic ticket price has been subsidised by SAJFP, and is R150 per person (actual cost R215), which does not include a donation. If you’re able to contribute more towards the donation and the costs of the Seder, please do.

Limited tickets are available for those who require financial support to attend. Please contact us for more info.

Children under 3 can attend for free.

For those unable to attend but who would like to support, our Webtickets link includes the option of making a donation only.

Allergies and dietary requirements:
Dinner will be Halaal, vegetarian and gluten free (except the Matzah), but please note that some items will contain nuts. Kosher meals will be available upon request - please simply contact us to organise this.

The Haggadah:
Guests have the option of purchasing a printed copy of the SAJFP haggadah, which they will receive at the Seder. Proceeds from the haggadah will be used to subsidize the Seder and all proceeds will be donated. Digital copies will be complimentary for all guests and will be provided via email before the event.

SAJFP will be participating in this Thursday’s Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage in Cape Town from Simon’s Town to the CBD.

The full walk is 41km as that is the length of Gaza. Participants can join in any part of the walk and a full schedule is available on the sign-up form linked in our bio.

SAJFP will be doing a short prayer service at the Plumstead stop around 12:45. We encourage all those in solidarity to participate in whichever part you can!
